Symptoms of Depression
While we can all experience depressed feelings or feelings of depression and we may tell others that we "feel depressed", it is only when we experience the symptoms of depression in an on-going way over a significant period of time that we can truly talk of being in a depression. These symptoms can vary but often include: loss of appetite, poor sleep patterns/insomnia, nervousness, irritability, loss of weight, low self-esteem and confidence, feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness, fatgue/low energy, agitation, inappropriate or exceesive guilt and self-blame, loss of interest, social withdrawal, self-neglect, negative thoughts about the world and their future, reduced sex drive and poor concentration.
Thinking Patterns in Depression
When in a depression we can find our mind working in negative and self-defeating ways. Examples of this may be :
Dysfunctional automatic thoughts
Mind reading: "She thinks I'm hopeless."
Fortune telling: "It's no use trying that, I'm bound to make a mess of it."
Labeling: "I'm useless."
All-or-nothing thinking: "Nothing ever works out for me."
Discounting positives: "Yes I did that, but anyone could have done it."
Catastrophizing: "It would be awful if I got anxious in that situation."
Maladaptive assumptions
Inappropriate/impossible rules by which you think you should live e.g. "I should have everyone's approval", "If someone doesn't like me then I'm not worthy of love", "If I failed at that I am a failure".
Negative self-concepts
Focusing upon and exagerating weaknesses and shortcomings, playing down positive qualities.
Depression - Risk Factors
There are a number of
risk factors associated with depression. This does not mean that depression will always occur as other factors may modify the outcome, but risk factors increase the probability of a depression. Some of the main
risk factors are:
Stressful situations and circumstances. Life changes/events bringing about various kinds of loss.
Conflict in close relationships
Economic and financial difficulties
Poor social skills in relating to others
Poor skills in problem-solving
Poor self-management skills
Dysfunctional ways of thinking about and perceiving ourselves, others, situations, etc
Physical, sexual, or emotional abuse (past or present)
Existence of other mental conditions such as anxiety
Assessment for Hypnotherapy for Overcoming Depression
A thorough assessment is essential to determine the factors which are affecting you in order to devise a programme of hypnotherapy tailored to your individual needs.
An assessment may include some of the following:
Explore the onset and history of depression and possible origins.
Determine the extent and prevalence of the various symptoms.
Identify the existence of relevant risk factors.
Assess problem-solving, social and self-management coping skills.
Identifying relaxing/calming and relevant successful past general experiences in your life which can be used positively within hypnotherapy.
Consider your own perceptions and feelings about yourself.
Explore general perceptions and thinking patterns that possibly may be exacerbating depressive thoughts and behaviour.
Consideration of how people around you are affecting you eg: sources of support.
Identify any background psychological factors such as stress, anxiety or significant life changes.
Identify and review your attitude to relaxation and opportunities for relaxation.
Considering practical strategies appropriate to you personally which can help you to relax which hypnotherapy can strengthen.
Programme of Hypnotherapy to Overcome Depression
Depending upon the above we will then agree a programme of hypnotherapy to help you to overcome depression. This could include:
If an early experience is relevant we will address this to enable you to let go of any negative associations leaving you free to move on.
Reduce negative mind frames, thoughts and emotions and facilitate positive ones.
Reframe how you perceive, experience and think about yourself and significant others in your life.
Strengthen positive practical strategies for dealing with depressive feelings.
Reframe your perceptions of how others are viewing and evaluating you.
Strengthen your general levels of self-esteem and confidence and ability to be assertive.
Enhance problem-solving, social and self-management coping skills.
Identifying and encouraging rewarding involvement in activities/interests that you will enjoy.
Increase self-reward for positive behaviour and achievements.
Facilitate positive sleeping patterns.
If you wish during one of the sessions we will make a recording on CD to complement the live hypnotherapy session for a nominal charge. This will be tailored to your needs and can then be used in your own home to reinforce the work we have done in the "live sessions". This has generally been found to be the best way to produce audio recordings that will be effective.
The above is not exhaustive but will give you an indication of the general approach. All of the above would involve the use of direct and indirect suggestions, visualisation, imagery, etc. Because we are working together with your unconscious mind we are tapping into resources to help you change which are usually not easily accessible to your conscious mind.
The number of sessions required will vary depending upon the degree of the depression and the complexities involved. Please see the Hypnotherapy Fees Page for details of fees.
